Cars: previous owners and selling

Last checked: 28 Sep 2026

Most new cars are connected to an app that can show where the car is and control some of its functions. When a car changes hands, the previous owner's account can stay linked unless someone removes it. Here's how, for the UK's 13 best-selling brands in 2025, plus Tesla and Jaguar Land Rover.

Two steps, not one

Several manufacturers say a factory reset in the car doesn't unlink it from the owner's account. Kia and Toyota say this explicitly, and Volkswagen says a reset alone doesn't end the contract. So:

  1. Selling: remove the car from your app account, and reset or wipe the car.
  2. Buying used: check whether the car is still linked to someone else, and set it up in your own account. Kia's UK FAQ says a previous owner who doesn't disconnect can keep tracking the car.

Emergency calling (eCall) keeps working: the manufacturers that mention it say privacy and offline settings don't switch it off.

By brand

VolkswagenThe buyer can remove the previous primary user on the car's screen; the old owner is emailed and has two weeks to reverse it.BMWOnly the main user can hand over the main-user role, so ask the seller to do it. Selling takes an unlink and a reset.FordA FordPass Connect reset removes every account linked to the car's modem; a factory reset removes previous owners and their data.KiaKia says a previous owner who didn't disconnect can keep tracking the car; reset Kia Connect. Sellers need to deactivate it, not just factory-reset.AudiDisengage the car from your myAudi account and delete personal data before you sell. There's no UK guide for buyers removing a previous key user.HyundaiThe seller should transfer the main user, deactivate Bluelink in the car and delete the vehicle in the app.ToyotaToyota recommends buyers create their own account. Sellers must cancel, remove the car and delete the head-unit profile; deleting the profile alone doesn't unlink the account.NissanRegister as the new owner; if the seller didn't unpair, Nissan may ask for proof of ownership.Mercedes-BenzThe seller must unpair the car (only the main user can) and reset the multimedia system.MGMG's UK documents describe logging out of the car's account; no factory-reset or owner-transfer procedure was found.TeslaEach Tesla has one owner account at a time. Buyers claim ownership in the app with ID and the V5C; sellers should factory-reset before removing the car.Jaguar Land RoverSellers remove the car on the My InControl website and delete in-car profiles. Buyers check the overhead console and set up their own InControl account.SkodaŠkoda warns a previous owner may still control the car's functions.
