Polestar's connected services: Polestar app, Polestar ID. Sellers unpair the app, factory reset the car and transfer ownership on polestar.com. Buyers claim the car on polestar.com; on a Polestar 2 you may be asked for proof of ownership if the seller doesn't respond.
Bought it used: remove the previous owner
- Claim the car on polestar.comPolestar 2
polestar.com → Polestar ID → Add carPolestar's UK manual says you claim the car by entering its VIN. The previous owner is asked to confirm; if they don't act within seven days, you're asked to show your Vehicle Certificate of Ownership.
Polestar also says to make sure a factory reset has been done, then accept the data terms in the car and connect the Polestar app.
- Register as ownerPolestar 3, Polestar 4
polestar.com → Polestar ID → Add carPolestar's UK manuals say a buyer registers on polestar.com. If no owner is registered, connecting your phone makes you the owner.
Polestar 3: once the previous owner is removed, you can also register in the car: owner profile → Manage access → Sign in to manage connected services (you need both key cards).
Selling: unlink and wipe
- Unpair the Polestar appPolestar 2
Polestar app → Car symbol tab → User management → UnpairPolestar's UK manual says to delete the link between the app and the car before you uninstall the app.
In the car (software 2.5 or later): your profile → Digital Key and remote functions → Unpair this phone.
- Factory resetPolestar 2
App view symbol → Settings symbol → System → Reset optionPolestar's UK manual says a factory reset deletes profiles, user data, connected keys and personal settings, and should be done when ownership changes.
Only an admin profile can do it (the owner profile always is), and all keys must be in the car. Polestar 3: car symbol → Settings → System and apps → Reset options. Polestar 4: car symbol → Settings → System → Reset options.
- Transfer ownershipOn the website
polestar.com → Polestar ID → Your car → Transfer ownershipPolestar's UK manual says the owner transfers the car to the new owner on polestar.com. On the Polestar 3 this triggers an automatic factory reset; on the Polestar 4 it doesn't, so reset the car first.
Polestar 2: choose that you've sold the car, enter the new owner's contact details and submit; the new owner has 7 days to accept. If you've sold the car but can still see it, the Polestar 3 manual says to choose "I have sold my car".
Privacy and offline settings
- Polestar privacy settingsPolestar 2
App view symbol → Settings symbol → Privacy → Polestar privacy settingsPolestar's UK privacy notice says the privacy menu covers microphone, location and app permissions and data sharing with Polestar and Google, and that data sharing with Polestar is off by default. Emergency calling (eCall) can't be turned off.
Polestar 3: car symbol → Settings → Privacy. Polestar 4: car symbol → Settings → Profiles → Privacy settings.
Good to know
- Polestar's manual says that if you only delete the app without unpairing it, the next connection to the car can run into problems.
Not found in Polestar's public UK documents: Steps for the Polestar 1 and Polestar 5, and whether Polestar 3 and 4 owners need to unpair the app separately. Menu paths can differ by model and software version; each one here is for the version its source names.
