Can you turn off the ads on a smart TV?
Last checked: 14 Oct 2026
Most smart TV platforms show some ads or sponsored tiles in their own menus, such as on the home screen or screensaver. LG is the only brand we've found with settings that turn them off. On the others, the ad settings make ads less personalised, but the ads themselves continue, and the platforms say so.
This page is about the TV's own menus. Ads inside apps, such as a streaming service's adverts, are controlled by each app and aren't covered here.
At a glance

"No setting documented" means the platform's own manuals and help pages don't describe one. Several say outright that you'll still see ads; the notes under each platform quote them.
LG (webOS 26)
- Home PromotionTurns these ads off
Settings → All Settings → System → Additional Settings → Home Settings → Home PromotionTurns off the advertisements on the Home screen.
From LG's webOS 26 guide (UK build for the C6 and G6); LG's US webOS 26 guides give the same paths. In webOS 26, System is its own item under All Settings, so there's no General step. LG's manual is hosted on a site with a broken HTTPS certificate, so the link uses plain HTTP.
- Content RecommendationRelated setting
Settings → All Settings → System → Additional Settings → Home Settings → Content RecommendationTurns off content recommendations on the Home screen.
- Live PromotionTurns these ads off
Settings → All Settings → System → Additional Settings → Live PromotionLG's manual: "Setting Live Promotion to Off will remove advertisements from Live Plus."
- Screen Saver PromotionTurns these ads off
Settings → All Settings → System → Additional Settings → Screen Saver Settings → Screen Saver PromotionTurns off the advertisements displayed on the screen saver.
- Limit AD TrackingAds continue, less personalised
Settings → All Settings → Support → Privacy & Terms → Advertisement → Limit AD TrackingAds based on your interests may no longer be shown. Ads themselves continue.
The same screen has Reset AD ID. UK and EU models also have CMP Settings under Privacy & Terms for advertising consent.
LG's manual describes advertisements on the Home screen and a switch to turn them on or off.
Samsung (Tizen, 2025 models)
- Interest-Based AdvertisingAds continue, less personalised
Settings → All Settings → General & Privacy → Terms & PrivacyUntick it to stop ads being personalised. The number of ads stays the same.
In the UK the checkbox reads "I consent to Interest-Based Advertising". The Privacy Choices item in the Smart Hub menu leads to the same consents. To fully stop personalisation, also turn off "Improved personalized ads with Samsung account data" in your Samsung account (US). Samsung's notices give the checkbox name; the manual gives the menu path.
- Start Screen OptionRelated setting
Settings → All Settings → Advanced Features → Start Screen OptionChoose not to start on the Smart Hub home screen. The home screen and its content are unchanged when you open it.
Moved from General & Privacy to Advanced Features in the 2025 e-Manual.
- Autorun Samsung TV PlusRelated setting
Settings → All Settings → Advanced Features → Start Screen Option → Autorun Samsung TV PlusStops Samsung TV Plus starting automatically. Samsung says it "may not be supported depending on the model or geographical area."
Samsung's UK Smart Hub privacy notice (effective 1 Jul 2026) lists sponsored content within the Smart Hub and generic ads.
No setting to turn them off is documented. Samsung's UK notice says that withdrawing consent to Interest-Based Advertisements "will not reduce or prevent the delivery of generic or contextual advertisements", and that not opting in means you "will not reduce the number of ads you see".
Roku (Roku OS (Roku-branded TVs and Roku TV models from other brands))
- Personalized adsAds continue, less personalised
Settings → Privacy → Advertising → Personalized adsClear it to stop ads being personalised. Ads continue and can still be contextual.
Spelled "Personalised ads" on UK TVs. A factory reset turns it back on. The same screen has Reset advertising identifier.
- Auto-play videoRelated setting
Home → Settings → Accessibility → Auto-play videoSet to Off and videos on the home screen appear as still images instead.
Roku's support article describes banner ads that appear in Roku menus and screensavers.
Roku's US privacy policy says that with personalised ads off, "You will still see ads".
Fire TV (Fire TV (Amazon's TVs and Fire TV models from other brands))
- Interest-based AdsAds continue, less personalised
Settings → Preferences → Privacy Settings → Interest-based AdsTells apps that use the device's advertising ID not to use it to build ad profiles or show you interest-based ads. Ads continue.
Amazon's privacy FAQ covers Fire TV devices from other brands too. Same path in the UK and US.
Amazon Ads lists home-screen placements on Fire TV, including banners, sponsored tiles and sponsored screensavers.
No setting to turn them off is documented. Amazon's Fire TV privacy FAQ describes Interest-based Ads as telling apps that use the device's advertising ID not to use it to build ad profiles or target interest-based ads; it doesn't say the ads stop.
Google TV (Google TV)
- Delete advertising IDAds continue, less personalised
Settings → Privacy → Ads → Delete advertising IDStops apps using the advertising ID for personalised ads. Apps can still show ads.
The same screen has Reset advertising ID.
- Apps only modeRelated setting
Settings → Accounts & Sign In → Your profile → Apps only mode → Turn onHides personalised recommendations. Google says sponsored content and teasers for popular movies and shows still appear, and Search, the Assistant and your Watchlist are turned off.
Some manufacturers label the account menu differently, e.g. "Accounts & Profiles" on Hisense or "Manage accounts" on TCL UK.
Google says Google TV and Android TV "sometimes serve advertisements, which are labeled as advertisements".
Google: "You can't turn off ads, but you can control the use of your advertising ID for personalized ads across installed apps."
Vizio (VIZIO OS, 2025 models onwards)
- Limited Ad TrackingAds continue, less personalised
Menu → Privacy & Legal → Advertising → Limited Ad TrackingTurn it on and ads are less relevant to you. Ads continue.
Vizio TVs are sold in the US only.
Vizio's Ads and Privacy FAQ describes ads on VIZIO OS that continue, but are less relevant, with Limited Ad Tracking on.
No setting to turn them off is documented. Limited Ad Tracking makes ads less relevant rather than removing them.
Titan OS (Titan OS)
- Privacy Preference CentreAds continue, less personalised
Privacy settings → Privacy Preference CentreWithdraw consent for personalised advertising. Ads continue but aren't personalised.
Titan's privacy policy names this menu but not the full path on the TV; labels may vary by model.
- Advertising ID (Limit)Ads continue, less personalised
Data Privacy SettingsReset the advertising ID or set it to Limit, so it isn't used to personalise ads. Titan says the ID is still generated.
Titan's privacy policy names this menu but not the full path on the TV; labels may vary by model.
Titan's device privacy policy says ads are provided "by Titan as part of the user interface".
No setting to turn them off is documented. Titan says that with ad tracking off, "You will still see ads".
Sky Glass and Sky Stream
We haven't found an official Sky page saying whether Sky Glass shows paid promotions in its own menus. Sky's ad setting covers tailored ads in Sky TV programmes and is in your online Sky account; see the Sky settings guide.
If you'd rather have no menu ads at all
A TV without a smart platform has no menus of this kind, and some smart TVs can be set up without connecting them to the internet. See non-smart TVs, and using a smart TV without the internet. An external streaming device has its own ad settings too.
For what the TV may collect about your viewing, which is separate from these ad settings, see what ACR is and how to turn it off.
